About Namibia

Namibia, located in Southwest Africa, is a land of diverse landscapes. Known for its deserts, it is the home of some of the world’s most breathtaking scenery. The Namib Desert, featuring the iconic Sossusvlei dunes, is one of the oldest deserts in the world. Windhoek is the capital and largest city of Namibia, it's located in the central highlands of the country.

Visas

For Delegates from countries exempt from visa requirements (No application required, only present a valid passport at the Airport)

- Journalist (requires MICT accreditation) - NIPDB is to be provided with all expected international journalists to request accreditation before applying for a visa.

To enter Namibia, your passport must have an ‘expiry date’ at least 6 months after the date you arrive. It must also have at least one blank page. If you’re travelling to South Africa, you will need an additional 2 blank pages. 

Check with your travel provider that your passport and other travel documents meet the requirements.

Vaccines

The specific vaccine requirements for travellers entering Namibia can vary and are subject to change based on current global health situations. Typically, these requirements would include:

  1. Yellow Fever Vaccine: If you're coming from a country with a risk of yellow fever transmission or have transited through such a country for more than 12 hours, you may need a yellow fever vaccination certificate.

  2. Routine Vaccinations: It's recommended to be up to date with routine vaccinations like measles-mumps-rubella (MMR), diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis, varicella (chickenpox), polio, and your yearly flu shot.

Climate

Namibia's climate is generally arid and varies significantly across different regions. In the vast Namib Desert along the coast, conditions are typically dry with low rainfall.

Windhoek, the capital of Namibia has a hot semi-arid climate, with an annual average temperature exceeding 18°C. The city's weather is generally mild throughout the year. July is the coldest month, averaging at 13°C, while December is the warmest, with an average of 24°C. Rainfall is more common in the summer and scarce in winter.

Airports

Hosea Kutako International Airport (HKIA), located 45 km east of Windhoek, is Namibia's main international airport. It stands as the largest airport in Namibia, offering international flight connections.

Getting Around in Namibia

  • Car: The most popular way to travel, offering flexibility to explore.
  • Bus: There are bus services connecting major towns.
  • Train: Limited train services are available, but they are more scenic than practical for most travellers. The most popular travel routes for tourists include the journey from Windhoek to Walvis Bay.
  • Taxis and Shuttles: In cities like Windhoek, taxis and shuttle services are available.
  • Domestic Flights: For covering large distances quickly, domestic flights connect major cities.
