China holds the distinction of being the largest producer and consumer of hydrogen in the world. Since 2010, China has consistently increased its hydrogen production by 6.8% annually, reaching an impressive 33 million tons in 2020.

Hydrogen has been seamlessly integrated into several top-level national energy and technology development strategies. In March 2022, China’s top economic planner released a hydrogen development plan for the period from 2021 to 2035, further accelerating the hydrogen momentum.

The central government actively supports hydrogen technology through its R&D programs, with dedicated funding streams for renewable energy and hydrogen technology. Regional governments have also formulated their hydrogen strategies, often accompanied by local subsidy provisions.

Historically, hydrogen in China has primarily served as an industrial feedstock for ammonia production, methanol synthesis, and petroleum refining. However, the landscape is evolving, with plans to expand hydrogen use into the transport sector, particularly supporting the adoption of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles.

Notably, during the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, up to 1000 buses powered by domestically made hydrogen fuel cells were deployed, showcasing China’s technological readiness.

President Xi Jinping’s commitment to peak emissions by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2060 has shifted the focus toward green and blue hydrogen production.

Several green hydrogen projects are underway, especially in regions like Inner Mongolia and Xinjiang, supported by major state-owned energy enterprises such as Sinopec.

In summary, China’s hydrogen journey is marked by ambition, innovation, and a growing emphasis on sustainable energy solutions.
